Ogden Nash once said, “Progress is a fine thing, but it’s gone on long enough.” This quote is the embodiment of Blood on the Pavement. Progress and industrialization have a significant and deadly impact on nature and wildlife, and this series explores that. I use photography to document roadkill as I find it, shooting in varying lights and angles to highlight both the beauty of these animals and the grotesque fate they meet at the hands of “progress”.
It is important to note that I did not document every instance I found of roadkill, as many were in dangerous positions or already too decayed to tell what they had been in life. Even in just the handful of animals I documented for this series, the species range from animals that we often see as pests, such as raccoons or opossums, to animals we view with reverence, such as deer. Included are also protected species, such as hawks, gators, and black bears.
